Two of the seven races are American, and they could hardly be more different. Boston, first run in 1897, is the oldest annual marathon in the world and admits most of its field on qualifying time. New York is the largest by finisher count: a five-borough tour from Staten Island to Central Park, entered mainly by lottery.
